I’m not so much afraid of the darkness itself, but I do get bothered by those spirits which seem to prefer to roam about in it. Often at night, especially when the moonlight is not strong, I close the curtains. The evil spirits that roam about make me uncomfortable, and sometimes I feel they congregate near the windows of the house just to bother me. Thus, I draw the blinds. Closing the curtains doesn’t make the nighttime spirits go away, but it makes it so I don’t notice them as easily. I can’t possibly try to fight every spirit that comes out, so I find it far easier to ignore the things that appear when the lights go out.
One of the most perplexing observations I have made to date about things spiritual is that evil spirits are more active at night. Certainly most tales of myth and lore agree with this, and if you speak to almost any child he or she is far more afraid during the nighttime hours than during the day. In fact, even adults are more fearful after the sun goes down than when it is high in the sky, but the subject rarely comes up. After all, what adult wants to admit to being afraid of the dark?
It is a curious thing, and one I have always wondered about. The best explanation I can give is that the energy from sunlight has a restraining effect on evil spirits, and while far less-so with moonlight, a full moon is a better time to be out and about at night than during a new moon when no sunlight is reflected back upon us. The first chapter of Genesis reveals some interesting insight into this matter.
Genesis 1:14-19 says, “And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.”
I find it very interesting, and telling, that the sun and moon have three main functions as laid out in 1:18—to give light, govern the day and night, and to separate light from darkness. At first glance, these would appear awfully redundant, but I think they are talking about different things. The first is a physical function—giving light. The second is a matter of authority—denoting what these celestial bodies are responsible for, and what they govern. The third suggests that they act as some sort of boundary or dividing line, separating light from darkness. If we consider this, I suppose it becomes less surprising that evil spirits would be less overtly active during the day, because the sun has separated them as being from the darkness. At night, especially when the moon and its illuminating powers are at a lull, the forces of darkness and all manner of evil spirits are left either very minimally restrained or totally unrestrained.
I used to imagine vampires were outside my third-floor bedroom window when I was a kid, and even as a teenager. I didn’t believe they existed, I didn’t watch horror movies, and I had no understanding of visions, yet I would unintentionally imagine them from time to time anyway. The thing was that when I would see them in my imagination, I was always totally creeped out by them, and would often leave my room and go downstairs where other people were—even though I thought myself silly for doing it.
As an adult, I discovered those vampires I used to imagine were very real, and when those images would come into my imagination it wasn’t because I was creating them or summoning them to me. Rather, I was simply observing that which was already there. The imagination isn’t a land of pure fantasy—it is the canvas of our mind by which our consciousness perceives spiritual reality. If you find the darkness uncomfortable, you aren’t alone. I suspect there are many people out there like me—those who are disturbed by the spirits that come out after the sun goes down. You aren’t simply being bothered by things you imagine, but rather those things you see in your imagination are very real.
I haven’t figured out a good solution as of yet. Certainly prayer helps, in theory, but as I said, I don’t have the time and energy to try to deal with every single thing that goes bump in the night in the wide world, so I tend to focus on those that I see inside the house, and those outside get the curtains drawn. What do you do to help deal with unwelcome spirits when the lights go out?
Hmmm…I never really think much about the evil that torments. Sure, I know they lurk around. Many years back, the Lord showed me how to deal with those evil spirits. One had dared to follow me home. I was afraid. By that experience, the Lord instructed me to return back to that place where the evil spirit came from. I returned there, and He instructed me to ‘NOT be afraid, but to look that person in the eye’ which I did, and it backed away from me. It also left the person it had been in. I learned that they are subject to you who are in Christ. They fear you and the authority you have. They bow to the Christ in you. This is true. This has been my experience. Hope it helps you. I have experienced some of this. I think creating an atmosphere in our own homes as well as rooms where we shut down an open portals and place boarders around where we are keeps them away. Although when not expecting it they have pushed those boundaries. Had a witch come visit once. Made her go to sleep and dealt with her later. 🙂

Some observations, that may help, brother.
Just last week, during a spirit travel, the Lord had me intervene with a spirit that was influencing a serial killer. In the spirit, there was no night, even though I was there at 3am. The Lord accomplished what He wanted me to do.. then when I opened my eyes and was back in my bed.. I felt uneasy.. even though while in the “thick of it” during the travel i was fine. This is because I was more spirit conscious than carnal mind conscious.
I have not found demons to be more “active” at night. All interactions are in the spirit realm, which our sun does not impact. I see both heavenly and fallen at same day or night.
It helps us to remember that physical light is related to the physical realm. This deals with our soul. As we continue to walk by the spirit, and continue on in the process of walking out our self-worth and value and fully pleasing and unconditionally accepted in the eyes of our Father, our walk transitions from soul giving us so much data to our spirit governing the soul. (2 Cor 5:21, Col 1:19-22, )
I think the underlying sense of this is that our 5 physical senses become more acute when one of them is hindered, and at the top of this is the sense of sight. With our physical site playing such a large role in our ability to rest when we are operating soulishly, we are more dialed into the gateway of our imagination… which accesses the realm of the spirit.
As I have trained the younger generations in Christ to walk by the spirit and renew the soul, I have seen these same issues melt away. identity governs what our soul see and perceives and ultimately our responses.

Once three of us ladies were traveling in China and night came upon us before we had found a place to sleep. By asking people in the street where we might find clean beds we found a house with enough room for the three of us. As the host lead us into the “guest room” I noticed idols with receptacles and incense sticks and knew we were being bedded down in the family’s room for their gods. Jesus’ Holy Spirit lives in me and He stood guard over us all night. The next morning I awoke to see the host silently putting food in the receptacles for the idols and as soon as he saw that we were awake he lit the incense. We had a sound night of rest while the dark ones were held at bay. I agree with David that knowing who you are as God’s beloved, and His fierce jealous care, is key to one’s peace, day or night, anywhere.
I’m constantly applying the blood of Jesus to my home, the land it’s on and just all around my atmosphere wherever I am. I also take communion almost every day, especially if the enemy tries to put any fear on me or I sense a spirit of fear anywhere around. Just recently I was in my kitchen and I could sense a spirit of fear in the room, so I spoke to it to leave and I immediately took communion, which to me always has a powerful, faith-filling effect. Communion is powerful and the devil hates it, so he doesn’t like to stick around when you take communion. I’ve had prayers answered for other people when I took communion and prayed earnestly for them during the communion.
Years ago I set up parameters on my property. Cleansed, prayed, over and anointed with oil the ground and the house. I really have very little of this kind of issue. Once and a while there may be a disturbance but generally not. From year to year I will reset parameters just to alert them to the fact that this is God’s property and house.
I read Psalms 91 aloud. When in a new place I cover all sins committed in that place with the blood of Jesus, break all curses, destroy all demonic claims, and declare this new space for Jesus. I rebuke every evil spirit in that place and tell them to leave to Jesus for judgment and never come back. I then cover the place in the blood of Jesus and surround it with angels.
I cast them into the eternal torment. Once they realize that you know that you can send them there, they will not bother you as much!
I know that some religious people don’t believe that we have that ability. They quote Legion about “the appointed time”, but that “time” was when the kingdom of darkness was defeated by Jesus! For the last 2000 years, the doctrines of devils have given demons free run of the world by keeping believers deceived into thinking that they could only cast them into the “dry places” and then they could come back with 7 worse spirits to torment even more people.
Get rid of them for good! Know your authority, and practice it! I have heard them scream as they were going to the eternal torment, and it is a horrible sound that will make every hair on your body stand on end! I don’t have sympathy for them, but it is definitely not a sound that I would ever want to hear from a human being, unfortunately there will be those that will go there to the place prepared for the devil and his fallen angels.
Interesting technique. I have sent them to Jesus for judgment but i’ll have to try this the next deliverance.
Back in the late 80’s/early 90’s, when Jesus first told me to cast them into the torment, He said that His Church has been deceived for too long. We have let devils have free reign by believing that only He could judge them and get rid of them forever. He gave us that authority. The only beings that we have no right to judge are people. Everything else that is of the enemy, we are supposed to stop.
(rant on) This includes storms and any other disaster. I can’t tell you how much it bothers me when people will divert a tornado to protect their family, and let it destroy others! Jesus stopped the storm, He didn’t send it to kill other people! (rant off)
I usually get a lot of demonic opposition when I reveal these truths. The enemy hates the truth of our real authority that stops the works of the kingdom of darkness!
